I am a big fan of all of those animated holiday specials, especially those stop-motion Rankin/Bass productions. I watch them every year... Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer was the first, and still one of the most poignant.

I can look back now and reflect on little Hermie, the elf who was made to feel like a misfit just because he wanted to be a dentist instead of making toys.  He met up with Rudolf, and they became independent misfits together. But take a close look and listen... While Rudolf had a crush on the little doe Clarice, little Hermie the dentist was probably gay, making him an early gay icon... and he had an oral fixation.  So his appearance on this 1965 special predated Stonewall, making him (and this TV special) a forgotten milestone in the gay rights movement.

(BTW... did you know sometime after 1965 they removed a scene where Hermie "rides" Rudolf?! I think some homophobic TV executives knew what they were dealing with, even if we and other kids didn't.)
