Classic Gay Love, 25 Years Later

The first time I saw two men make out and fall in love at the movies (on screen, that is) was when I saw the 1987 British film Maurice. It's hard to believe that was 25 years ago. Yet, so many years later, this Merchant Ivory production of the E.M. Forester novel remains one of the best (non-pornographic) gay movies.

On the heals of the TV adaptation of Brideshead Revisited earlier in the 1980s, Maurice also focuses on young men coming of age and exploring special friendships in the early 20th century. The title character, played by blond James Wilby, meets Clive Durham, portrayed by Hugh Grant, at Cambridge. Durham falls in love with Maurice and tells him. At first shocked, Maurice soon yields, but at Clive's insistence the relationship remains sexless. In fact, Clive eventually swings back to the straight, aristocratic "life with wife" his family wants, especially after one of their college buddies is jailed for soliciting a soldier for homosexual sex... This leaves Maurice confused and in therapy (like many of us), but his life soon changes when he catches the eye and interest of working class Alec Scudder (played by Rupert Graves), a gameskeeper on Clive's estate. The scene where Scudder reveals his feelings by coming into Maurice's room on a rainy night and they make out will forever remain burned into my memory... It was then that I realized I either wanted to climb into the bed of an aristocratic boy or find another working class boy who'd want to climb into mine.

These memories all came flooding back when I found this YouTube video of Maurice and Scudder scenes, and when I realized this movie is 25 years old this year... Here it is for you to enjoy too.
